Jutro zaczynam zajecia. Swietnie.

Moja lokatorka to Samantha z Hong Kongu. Jeszcze jej nie spotkalam, zostawila mi notke w jezyku kantonskim.

Gruszki 'Centary' - ciekawe. Wygladaja jak zolte jablko, smakuja jak polaczenie jablka z pomaranczem, teksture miazszu maja gruszkowata.

Patrze na zatoke.... wyspy pokryte delikatna mgielka, jachty, gdzies tam przeswituje slonce... Raj? Kocham to miejsce jednoczesnie go nienawidzac.

--------------

Tomorrow I'm starting lectures. Great.

I haven't met yet my roommate, Samantha from HK. She left me a note in Cantonese language.

'Centary' pears - interesting. They look like yellow apple, taste like mixture of apple and orange, the texture is pear-like.

I'm looking on the bay... islands enveloped in delicate mist, yachts, somewhere there sun is getting out from clouds... Paradise? Everything of that reminds me about this what I lost. I love this place and hate at the same time.

Dzisiaj caly dzien stania w kolejkach a potem obiad na stolowce. Wybralismy sie tam z Garym, Scottem z Minnesoty i Patrickiem z Marsyli.

To tacy ludzie do ktorych moge zapukac, kiedy chce mi sie pogadac.

The whole day of queuing, later lunch on the canteen with Gary, Scott from Minnesota and Patrick from Marseille. I tried to eat with chopsticks but I was too hungry to watch running-away food, a fork was better. There were spinach lives with some onion-looking vegetables fried with garlic; a soup tasting as if someone poures boiling water on alga and served it without spices. But the best was dish which looked like a mixture of Chinese mushrooms with pieces of something dumpling-bread like, plus rice.

In the evening I missed Andrew terribly and my whole Lancaster world.

I jumped into outdoor swimming pool near the beach. Mountains were enveloped with fog, the hill covered with university buildings with lights switched, it was almost dark. There are palms near the swimming pool.

It’s like jumping into non-existence.

The night spent drinking jasmine tea with friends from the same floor – all of them are from HK – Ernest, Michelle, Centre and Pe Cze. That are those people whose door I can knock when I need to chat.

Jadac do miasta dzisiaj zastosowalam moja stara metode – jechac autobusem i wysiasc w miejscu wygladajacym na ciekawe. Jest to super sposob, gdy zostaje sie gdzies dluzej.

Wysiadlam w dzielnicy Pak Tak. Wloczylam sie waskimi uliczkami kilka godzin szukajac rzeczy, ktore mialam zamiar kupic. Tloki, markety uliczne, sklepiki…

Najgorszy zapach – kolo budynku z marketami rybnymi.

Niedaleko straganow znalazlam park Fung Tak. Bardzo maly, ale uroczy. Wchodzi sie do niego przez duza czerwona brame. Wszedzie duzo bujnej roslinnosci, kwadratowe slupki chyba z piaskowca, zakonczone kulami. W dole wzgorza fontanna a nad nia daszek cos jakby… deska klozetowa – tam gdzie dziura fontanna, dookola daszek pod ktorym mozna sie schowac przed deszczem. Sciezki zrobione z kamienia albo tworzywa sztucznego ulozonego w mozaike – wijace sie ksztalty.

------------------

While going to town today I used my old method – traveling by bus and getting off in the area, which looks nice. It’s a great while staying somewhere longer.

I got off in Pak Tak area and was wandering along narrow streets few hours looking for items, which I came to buy. Crowds, street markets, little shops. I must have attracted attention a lot, because there were no non-Chinese faces and some people seemed to observe me. Everyone was of similar height as I or shorter so I didn’t feel claustrophobic.

Most of the smells I felt there are unfamiliar. It’s even hard to say if they are nice or not – something like salty-spicy. Actually I avoid buying food on stalls. I don’t know most of these things, besides hundreds of people pass nearby and the air is very humid. Everything might be dirty or not fresh – it’s hot. Stomachs of the natives may stand it, mine not necessary.

The worst smell – near the building with fish market. The smell coming outside mixes with the sultry air, disgusting.

I feel very good wondering around, very safely. Many people and no one stops me as it happen in European cities.

Not far from the stalls I found a park Fung Tak. Very small, but charming. The entrance is through a huge, red gate. Bushy plants were everywhere and small square columns next to the pavement, made probably of sandstone and ended with balls. Down the hill a fountain with a roof around it similar to…closet board (? Not sure how it is in English) – there where hole was the fountain, around the roof under which it’s possible to hide while it’s raining. The paths were made of stone or artificial material creating a mosaic – plaiting shapes. On the square next to the fountain green, meter height vases with yellow flowers inside.

Now it’s summer monsoon period. It’s raining in intervals during the whole days. No, it’s not raining it’s pouring. I’m getting used to this air, but the worst thing is that it’s impossible do hide anywhere from the hot air. Air-conditioning only helps.

Weather forecast for tomorrow – 29C and air humidity 96%.

I’m waiting from my roommate; it will be great to live with someone. Hope that we’ll find a common language.

sie 31 2004 Podroz byla dluga, 28.08 / The journey was...

--------------------

The journey was very long. Being first time in life outside Europe, flying longer than two hours first time as well,  leaving a beautiful fragment of life behind and now being Hong Kong… When the plane started approaching the airport my heart was beating like a pneumatic rammer.

The people whom I met at the airport, bus stops and finally at the university were very helpful. Even one student led me directly to the hall, helped to communicate with porters, who spoke as much English as I Chinese, brought part of my luggage to my room and showed the building. He has recently graduated and lived in the same hall three years. He helped me a lot.

The university is situated on a slope falling down to a bay. As the result of that, the buildings are standing on ‘shelves’. From one shelf to another it’s possible to get by stairs, escalators or elevators (there are almost 30 of them). Gradually I’m learning how to get where.

In the evening, after the journey lasting almost 48 hours and discovering the campus I got indifferent about everything. It’s pretty here… bud I’d like to be in a completely different place.

My plans about just throwing on bed and oversleeping everything collapsed when in the porters’ lodge I met Gary. We found out that we live in the same hall. I felt good to have someone just to chat with. Later he popped into with three friends from HK, studying in England – one of them in Lancaster. We were talking mainly about the city, I felt energized after that.

The same evening I met Istvan from Hungary, studying in Milan. He was saying that almost all his friends in Italy are Poles, started throwing Polish phrases, I in return, those remembered from Budapest. It looks like the beginning of a beautiful friendship.

I value solitude a lot, but I need people: exchanging ideas, experiences and just simple chats.
